I read a lot more this month than I have been averaging. Fourteen books to my usual 8 or 9. I’m not entirely sure why that is, especially when several days I did not wind up doing my usual evening reading time.
That said, a Murderbot reread always inflates the numbers a bit because they’re short and I fly through them.
I probably won’t go through every book every month, but some leave me with thoughts I wanna ramble about.
The Art of Folding Space - John Wu
This one was very different from what I normally read and what I had been reading. The worldbuilding was confusing with so many like physics that I didn’t fully understand, but you also don’t really need to track it to enjoy the story imho. What was compelling, to me, about it was the dynamic between the MC and her sister - and through that sister the family and community she was in.
Several parts of that resonated really strongly with me, as someone who is the self-identified black sheep of her family and community that I grew up in. Especially the gaslighting and having your actions be presented both factually and at the same time entirely devoid of truth. (that is a weird paradox that I think you have to live through to understand fully, but it really came through to me in this story)
I found the ending really lacking. The payoff to me did not feel worth my time investment which is always frustrating. It can also be subjective and maybe I was just hoping for closure that wasn’t there.
You Belong Here - Megan Miranda
My friend recommended this one to me and when I finished listening to it I sent him a message
Willow: You owe me emotional damage for the ending of that book. OMG
P: smiley faceI really wanted this book to end differently… but I wasn’t mad about the ending, just… damaged by it, lol. I definitely enjoyed it and I will be listening to more of her books while I do my crafting!
What’s Next?
June is a quite month for new books. There IS the new Six of Crows book coming out at the end of the month, A Darker Shore, which I am approaching with some apprehension. It’s not exactly a novel, from what I understand it’s a mystery told through found documents and such? Set many years after the duology. So, we’ll see. I’d say I’m intrigued without saying I’m full on excited.
I started reading Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky and I’m finding it kind of dry so far? It is well spoken of though so I’m gonna keep at it.
What I think my problem is (lol she says as if there’s just one) is that I want more of the books and universes that I’m in love with. I want more Ana and Din, more Becky Chambers anything, more Captives War, more Emily and Wendell… I’m clamouring for more in the universe of Automatic Noodle.
Thankfully I will get some of my wishes later this year… but right now it has me rereading stuff and wishing it was new.
What are you reading? Any books you’re looking forward to in June?
