Gosh I really struggled to read this month. Ironic doubly because last month was such a great month for reading and because I absolutely adored the series I was reading!
The issue was more that my brain really struggled to find that nice quiet space for reading at the end of the day. Many days this month were full on revenge bedtime procrastination, and then reels with hubby instead of reading. I will say, for all my desire to scroll less and break up with my phone, watching reels actively with a loved one hits different. It’s not doomscrolling the way that solo-watching can (but not always) be. That said, I am hoping to return to my regular bedtime reading because when I don’t have the space for bedtime reading it usually means that my schedule, for some reason, has been turned around. And goddammit I like my schedule.
The only new books I read this month were a trilogy by the author of one of my favourite on-going (but almost completed) series, Robert Jackson Bennett. I really enjoyed this series, although after reading the AN at the end of Locklands and finding out he started writing the book in Oct 2019 and so the book was primarily written during the start of the (still ongoing) pandemic some other things made sense. It’s subtle, but I would not have been surprised to learn the original story was going to perhaps unfold somewhat differently? It’s just a bit more fuzzy, and sorry I cannot explain what I mean more than that.
BUT, I still fully recommend the series, and although I borrowed it from the library this time, if it’s not available next time I wanna read it (and there WILL be a next time) I am quite happy to purchase it.
I’m sad to report that Children of Time was a DNF for me. I just could NOT get into it. I will probably try other titles by Adrian Tchaikovsky, but not just now.
I’m also sad to report that as of the time of writing I’m not aware of any new books coming out in July that are on my radar. I’m very much in a phase of reading solarpunk leaning sci-fi and mysteries that aren’t like, modern. (IE: I love a historical mystery, fantasy mystery, sci fi mystery… but I’m not super interested in like, modern crime novels… if that distinction makes sense?)
This month I am going to try and get out to the physical library a bit more. There’s a novel series a friend told me about that isn’t available thru my library’s Libby that I wanna check out.
